Monkey Man is Dev Patel’s inaugural venture as a director with a marvel in the action genre, telling of the poignant tale of oppression, trauma, and fury transforming into revenge in the Indian slum’s sinister fight clubs, the longer you watch the more you are rooting for Monkey Man to get his vengeance. Dev Patel’s role as Monkey Man could make even John Wick reconsider whether he should pick a fight with him.
Dev Patel “Monkey Man” exacts vengeance in this exciting action thriller
The inspiration for his character the Hindu monkey deity Hanuman was a great telling of his bringing up, which is brought to life by Indian subcultures and national politics in this film’s narrative. I love revenge focused films, however, be prepared as this has some truly graphic, visceral hand-to-hand combat, and somber tones that will have you thinking about the film long after you see it. Amazing storytelling, direction and acting from the cast who made this one amazing experience.
The movie’s main antagonist, Baba Shakti, an ultranationalist kingpin who incites adoring crowds into a wild state is also an important aspect of the power-hungry and corruption within the society. Dev Patel known for his roles in “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” not only shines as the seemingly invincible hero identified as Kid but also makes his debut as a director in this film. The film is set in Mumbai, with the Hindu myth of the monkey-god Hanuman heavily influencing both its name and central theme.
Monkey Man brings attention to India’s caste system injustices more distinctly than anticipated. It offers stark depictions of Mumbai’s poverty and at a stage, Kid finds sanctuary in a temple housing mistreated transgender women. Vipin Sharma leads the group and provides the hero with the essential mentorship and guidance to get him back on his feet.
Kung Fu Panda 4 Review – The Dragon Warrior Strikes Again
Dev Patel wanted to bring out the Hollywood action but with a bit more story, to bring to life a world of corruption, vengeance, and justice, and he did it, for me on a $10 million budget has achieved something of this quality and depth, that would put some studios to shame.
Monkey Man is a must-see film, releases in theatres this Friday, 5 April 2024.
Crème de la crème
