Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) today announced that the PlayStation 5 had surpassed 50 million units as of 9 December sold through to consumers. The PS5 console has experienced strong momentum this year, driven by a slate of highly popular games and Sony’s continued focus on bringing innovation to the gaming experience, including PS5 game streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members.
The PS5 hit 50 million sold on December 9, 161 weeks after it launched in November 2020. The PS4 reached 50 million sold 160 weeks after launch, and the PS4 sold 117 million units since going on sale in 2013, so the PlayStation 5 can likely beat that in the coming year or two.
Sony has set an ambitious target of selling 25 million PS5 consoles in the current financial year ending March 31, 2024. If it manages it, it’ll be the most consoles Sony has ever shifted in a single financial year.

The enthusiasm among players for the PS5 has surged, November and the Black Friday week as the most significant month for PlayStation console sales to date. This surge has been fueled by recent blockbuster releases like the highly acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 by Insomniac Games, alongside well-received collaborative titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios and Alan Wake 2 by Remedy Entertainment. Additionally, the latest installment, EA SPORTS FC 24, continues to captivate sports gaming enthusiasts, while the arrival of Roblox on PlayStation has garnered immense popularity among gamers spanning various age groups.
Three years into its lifecycle, PlayStation 5 is hitting its stride
“Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners,” “We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one.”
said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
