Captain America: Brave New World Review

Following a series of films exploring less familiar characters, Captain America: Brave New World brings us back to a core aspect of the Marvel Universe with a familiar icon, albeit with a new face. The latest figure to take up the mantle of Captain America is Sam Wilson, previously known as Falcon, who now wields the legendary shield.

The question remains: will he rise to the occasion?

Captain America: Brave New World

A political thriller, with a side betrayal

Captain America: Brave New World sets the record straight right away , with an opening that focuses on the political context in which we will move, focusing on the newly elected President of the United States Thaddeus Ross, who we has been a questionable character throughout the Marvel story so far, and we find out just how far he will go to keep himself alive, literally.

Ross conveys a pivotal message to Sam Wilson that encapsulates the essence of this new chapter for the character. It delves into Anthony Mackie’s portrayal and the weighty legacy of the shield. Sam grapples with the inevitable doubts about whether he can meet the high expectations that come with such a significant responsibility.

Similarly, Mackie’s charisma shines through as he embraces this challenge, complementing the role with his own talents. The film faces the challenge of perpetuating the politically charged narrative established in “Winter Soldier” while also building on the rich themes and characters introduced in “Civil War.”

“You may be Captain America, but you’re not Steve Rogers .”

Captain America: Brave New World

Tying up loose ends

The continuity is truly impressive, weaving together earlier MCU entries like The Incredible Hulk (2008) and The Eternals (2021) in a masterful way. Instead of overwhelming viewers with all the characters at once, the story unfolds through clever nods to Ross’s history and news segments about past events.

We see the dynamics between the Hulk (Edward Norton/Lou Ferrigno) and Abomination (Tim Roth), as well as the conflicts that arose over the resources on Celestial Island. For context, Celestial Island refers to the body of the Celestial Tiamut, which was prevented from fully rising in The Eternals.

This is key as now the film introduces adamantium to the MCU, a substance first introduced in Marvel’s mutant universe as the metallic substance Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) bones are infused with.

Captain America: Brave New World

To recap, excuse the pun 🙂 Captain America: Brave New World transports viewers back to the era of high-quality MCU films while also expanding the universe into intriguing new territories. With its focus on espionage and political drama, this film offers a refreshing shift from other recent MCU entries.

Sam’s portrayal of Captain America introduces a unique viewpoint on the iconic character. It’s an essential watch for fans eager to embrace the excellence of earlier days, presented with a novel twist, and the start of something new and fresh may be on the horizon.
