Borderlands Movie Review – A Pandora’s Box Of Action

Borderlands Movie Review

Having played every Borderlands title out there, I must say Eli Roth and the star-studded cast did a decent job at showcasing life on Pandora and what can be expected in the Borderlands Universe. I generally get nervous about film adaptations based on games, but I was pleasantly surprised to see most of the Borderlands characters and world showcased correctly in the film, with a few twists and changes as expected.

Pre-Screening Pandamonium

We got the chance to see the movie at a pre-screening at Nu Metro – A full-on fan experience that brought the Borderlands community together. The cosplayers brought the characters to life, and watching the film with true fans of the game made the experience even more epic!

Borderlands Movie Review

Now let’s get back into the Borderlands Movie Review, we start with Cate Blanchett, who stars as Lilith, one of the main characters in the film, bringing a mix of skepticism but also intense resolve to the character of a tough intergalactic bounty hunter as she maneuvers through the cutthroat corporate world of Pandora with a diverse group of bickering outcasts.

One of the outcasts includes Kevin Hart, who plays a rogue soldier named Roland and tasked himself with protecting Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), the pyromaniac daughter of the galaxy’s most powerful man who wants to open the Vault on Pandora, the ruthless Atlas (Edgar Ramírez) – Yes the weapons manufacturer, we now have a face attached to the name and corporation, and while Edgar does a good job as the antagonist, I have to say his character was one of the week points of the movie.

I may be a little biased here but one of the highlights of the movie has to be Claptrap, my favourite character in the games who epitomizes the Borderlands world like no other character, the quick-witted lines will have you in stitches, voiced by Jack Black, who brings his own unique version to the character and I can say, the best-cast choice for Claptrap.

Borderlands Movie Review

If you have never played the games, you may find it a little hard to follow some of the jargon used throughout the film, however, quite a bit of it is explained throughout the film. As with the games, stumbling onto something is part of the Borderlands experience and in the film, Lilith stumbles upon the key artifact needed for the Vault just by opening a single drawer as the film begins to hint at her powers. Another aspect of the film that makes it feel like a video game is the fact that Roland escapes a seemingly inevitable Psycho-inflicted death.

The drawback of the film has to be some of the pacing, adapting the pacing of a game to a movie can be challenging and I think getting the dense, expansive world of Borderlands into a 103 min long film is not easy and they could have possibly made the film a little longer with some story elements extended a little more – some parts felt too rushed or cut that made it a little disjointed, but the main foundations are there and there is so much that can be done with this franchise, that I hope we can get even more Borderlands in future, whether a movie or a series, just bring more of the Chaos.

Overall, it was a good movie, and as a fan of Borderlands, I feel some elements should have been improved slightly for it to shine more. I enjoyed it, and if you like the franchise, it should be on your list of things to watch for sure.

Borderlands is now in Cinemas, be sure to get your tickets at Nu Metro for the full experience.

They should have made it a series like fallout and the last of us, either way I am going to watch it. I love Borderlands.
