Sega has officially filed a trademark for Shadow the Hedgehog with the Japanese patent office, sparking speculation that a remaster or an entirely new game could be in development. Fans are already buzzing with theories about what the company might have planned next.
As spotted by Sonic City (first reported by The Gamer), it’s listed under Class 9 (video game software) and Class 41 (entertainment), mentioning “computer programs downloadable via the internet.” The trademark was published earlier this week on Chizai Watch (Official patent and trademark gazettes).

Shadow has been enjoying plenty of attention recently, appearing prominently in Sonic x Shadow Generations and gaining even more popularity through his role in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, where Keanu Reeves voiced his character.
Shadow the Hedgehog first appeared in the Sonic series in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 before starring in his own game in 2005, released on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. While critics weren’t kind to it at the time, the game has since gained a cult following thanks to its mix of classic 3D Sonic platforming and Shadow’s unusual use of firearms in combat.
As with any rumour or trademark filing, it’s all just speculation for now — so take it with a grain of salt until Sega makes an official announcement.
